3 ways to kill your readers with repetitions

Reading a blog that is loaded with repetitions is the equivalent of getting hit in the head with a baseball bat — repeatedly. Here are the most common repetitions to avoid when writing an article or blog post.

Repeating ideas

Have you ever read an entire paragraph only to realize that it contained one single idea expressed repeatedly in three to five consecutive sentences? Unless this was a rewriting contest, reading several versions of the exact same thought is most certainly overkill.

Most of the time repetitions of this nature indicate that the writer did not really grasp the subject matter. It’s also possible that he just could not make up his mind which sentence to choose as final version. No matter the reason, your readers won’t appreciate being bored to tears. Especially not online where they can access a zillion other options with one single click.

Repeating words and phrases

Aside from repeated thoughts, using the same verbs and adjectives can also cause a migraine for the reader. Change it up. If you can’t come up with an equivalent phrase please be so kind to use a thesaurus.  You can even save time and money by using a free online edition.

Repeating sentence intros

Also refrain from starting every single sentence  with ‘There are,’  ‘It is’ or similar boring intros. You cannot possibly create a flow this way and the reader feels like he is being hit over the head with a baseball bat over and over again .

Conclusion

Variety is the spice of life. This applies to writing at least as much as to all other areas of  life. While repetitions might work in song lyrics they tend to induce instant boredom when reading an article or blog. Avoid the three most common repetitions when writing and you might just hook your readers for life.

  1. Very good advice. Among the ever increasing number of bloggers and self-made writers on the web nowadays, only a few know the basics to write something relevant AND pleasant to read.
